The job
I’ve worked for Friday’s for 11 years. I applied through an ad in the paper. The salary looked good, and it said you could earn about the same again in tips. And it’s been true, all along. I used to work at Friday’s in Reading, but I wanted to move to Sheffield to be nearer my friends and my band. I was really lucky because I moved just at the time our new restaurant was opening in Sheffield, so I just got a transfer.
The team
Everyone’s so friendly and laid back here. The departments all get on well together. We’re friends inside and outside of work, so it’s a really relaxed environment even when we’re really busy. The managers have always really helped me out when it comes to needing time out for band practise and gigs and stuff. They’re really good at sorting the rota around your lifestyle.
The perks
The training’s so thorough that, by the time you start, you’re really good at your job so you earn great tips. Friday’s being part of the Fair Tips Charter makes a big difference too. Guests are really aware of the fact that some restaurants cheat staff out of their tips. They’re always asking if I’ll actually take their tips home, or whether the company will take them off me. It’s great to be able to tell them that I get every penny.
The future
I’ve actually just completed training to become a qualified IT technician, so I’ll hopefully be doing more of that soon.
Top tip
The grass isn’t greener elsewhere! I’ve seen people leave Friday’s, and they end up coming back. It’s lovely here.
